Accessibility on WooCommerce

WooCommerce is a plugin that turns a WordPress site into a store, so a WooCommerce site has two layers to get right: the WordPress theme and the store itself. Product pages, the cart, the checkout and the My Account area are all generated by WooCommerce templates or blocks, and every extension adds more markup on top.

Accessibility problems in a store cost sales as well as legal risk: a shopper who cannot choose a variation, apply a coupon or fix a checkout error cannot buy. Store owners also control a lot of what is shown, such as product image alt text, swatch labels and promotional banners, so no plugin can fix everything for you.

WooCommerce publishes its own accessibility page describing its work to improve the cart, checkout and product components it ships. Your theme, extensions and product content are outside that work, and are where most store-specific issues appear. (opens in a new tab, source: WooCommerce: Accessibility)

Common Accessibility Issues on WooCommerce Sites

  • Variation pickers and swatches

Color and size swatches built from clickable boxes often have no accessible name or keyboard support, so a shopper cannot choose a variation without a mouse.

  • Product galleries and zoom

Gallery sliders, thumbnail strips and lightbox zoom can trap keyboard focus, and product photos are often uploaded with no alt text or just the file name.

  • Cart and checkout forms

Coupon fields, quantity steppers, address fields and account sign-up can lack labels, and checkout errors are not always announced to screen reader users.

  • Mini cart and off-canvas drawers

Slide-in carts and menus often fail to move focus into the drawer, let focus wander behind it, or ignore the Escape key.

  • Payment gateway and express checkout embeds

Card fields, wallet buttons and pay-later messages load in iframes from the gateway. Missing frame titles and low-contrast widgets are outside your theme, so they need a different fix.

How AccessBell Scans Your WooCommerce Site

  1. Enter any public page. Paste the address of a page on your WooCommerce site into the scanner above. There is nothing to install: no plugin, no code snippet and no login.
  2. We load it in a real browser. AccessBell opens the page in headless Chrome and runs its scripts, so it tests what your visitors actually see, including content added by your theme, apps or plugins.
  3. We run the WCAG rules. The open-source axe-core engine checks the page against the standard you choose, and every result is mapped to the WCAG success criteria it affects.
  4. You see what is wrong in seconds. The free scan lists every issue it finds, ranked by severity, with the WCAG criteria each one fails. Start a free trial to get the failing code and the fix for each one. Our methodology explains exactly what runs and what still needs a person.

How to Fix What the Scan Finds

  1. Where you can, use the block-based Cart and Checkout. WooCommerce maintains those blocks, so they tend to pick up accessibility fixes as the plugin updates, which heavily customized shortcode templates in a theme do not.
  2. Write alt text when you add each product image, and name variation options clearly, such as "Size: Large", instead of relying on swatch color alone.
  3. Rescan after every WooCommerce, theme and extension update. A new payment or review extension can add inaccessible markup overnight.
  4. Run a free scan above on your homepage and a few key pages, fix issues starting with critical and serious, then rescan to confirm.
  5. For ongoing protection, AccessBell Pro monitors up to 500 URLs per domain every day and alerts you when a theme, app or plugin update introduces a new issue.

WooCommerce Accessibility — Frequently Asked Questions

Is WooCommerce accessible out of the box?

WooCommerce works to make its own cart, checkout and product components accessible, and keeps improving them. But your theme, extensions and product content decide how accessible your store actually is, so every store needs to be tested.

Can the scanner test my cart and checkout?

The free scan loads a page the way a new visitor sees it, so a cart or checkout page may show an empty-cart message. Scan your product pages and homepage here, and test the steps that need items in the basket by hand with a keyboard as well.

Does AccessBell work with WooCommerce?

Yes. AccessBell scans the live, rendered page in a real Chrome browser, so it tests what shoppers see no matter which theme or extensions generated it.
