Limits of Automated Testing
The AccessBell website accessibility checker uses automated rules to detect common barriers based on the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), using the open-source axe-core engine. Automated testing can identify many objective, code-level issues, but it cannot evaluate every WCAG success criterion. Some requirements, such as whether alternative text is meaningful, whether focus order is logical or whether captions are accurate, require human judgment.
A scan result, score or report from AccessBell does not certify that a website is accessible or that it complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act (see the Department of Justice's web accessibility guidance), Section 508, the European Accessibility Act, EN 301 549, AODA or any other law or standard. A page with no detected issues may still contain barriers.
No Guarantee Against Claims
Using AccessBell does not guarantee that you will not receive a demand letter, complaint or lawsuit. We recommend combining automated monitoring with manual testing by people familiar with assistive technology, and feedback from users with disabilities.
