Accessibility on Weebly

Weebly is a drag-and-drop site builder, now owned by Square, and many small businesses, shops and community groups still run on it. You build pages by dropping elements such as text, images, galleries, buttons and forms into a theme, with an Embed Code element for anything else.

The editor controls most of the markup, so a Weebly site owner has less direct control than a developer with a custom theme. That makes it more important to know which problems you can fix in the editor, such as alt text, headings, link text and colors, and which belong to the theme.

WebAIM’s annual analysis of the top one million home pages finds detectable WCAG failures on the vast majority of them. Small-business sites built with drag-and-drop tools are no exception, and the most common failures are the ones a free scan finds first. (opens in a new tab, source: WebAIM Million)

Common Accessibility Issues on Weebly Sites

  • Images without descriptions

Some image areas, such as header and banner images, may not offer an alt text field, so check each one in the editor and describe meaningful images in the text around them.

  • Slideshows and galleries

Auto-advancing slideshows have no pause control, and gallery images often keep file names instead of descriptions.

  • Text styled as headings

Large bold paragraphs look like headings but are not, so a screen reader user cannot jump through the page by heading.

  • Low-contrast theme colors

Light text on a photo header, gray body text and pale buttons often fail the contrast minimum, especially in themes with image overlays.

  • Contact forms and embedded content

Forms with unclear field names, buttons that are images of text, and embedded maps or videos with no title or captions.

How AccessBell Scans Your Weebly Site

  1. Enter any public page. Paste the address of a page on your Weebly site into the scanner above. There is nothing to install: no plugin, no code snippet and no login.
  2. We load it in a real browser. AccessBell opens the page in headless Chrome and runs its scripts, so it tests what your visitors actually see, including content added by your theme, apps or plugins.
  3. We run the WCAG rules. The open-source axe-core engine checks the page against the standard you choose, and every result is mapped to the WCAG success criteria it affects.
  4. You see what is wrong in seconds. The free scan lists every issue it finds, ranked by severity, with the WCAG criteria each one fails. Start a free trial to get the failing code and the fix for each one. Our methodology explains exactly what runs and what still needs a person.

How to Fix What the Scan Finds

  1. Use the real Heading style for headings instead of enlarging text, and write link text that says where the link goes.
  2. Choose theme colors with enough contrast. Our contrast checker tells you whether a pair of colors passes before you apply them.
  3. If the editor will not let you fix a problem, such as a missing alt text field, change the element, for example by using a gallery, or move the information into the page text. Weigh up whether a platform with more control suits your needs as you grow.
  4. Run a free scan above on your homepage and a few key pages, fix issues starting with critical and serious, then rescan to confirm.
  5. For ongoing protection, AccessBell Pro monitors up to 500 URLs per domain every day and alerts you when a theme, app or plugin update introduces a new issue.

Weebly Accessibility — Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make a Weebly site accessible?

You can fix a good share of the common issues in the editor: alt text where fields exist, headings, link text, colors and form labels. Some problems depend on the theme, so scan to see what is on your site.

Should I add an accessibility widget to Weebly?

A widget will not fix your pages’ code, and its claims of instant compliance have drawn regulators’ attention. Fix the issues the scan finds first, and treat any toolbar as an extra at most.

Does AccessBell work with Weebly?

Yes. AccessBell scans any public page in a real browser, so there is nothing to install in Weebly.
