Section 508 for Weebly Sites

Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act requires federal agencies to make the information and communication technology they develop, buy, maintain or use accessible. The Revised 508 Standards, in effect since January 2018, incorporate WCAG 2.0 Level A and AA for web content, electronic documents and software.

Private businesses are not directly covered, but agencies must buy accessible technology, so vendors are often asked for an Accessibility Conformance Report (ACR) based on the VPAT. This checker runs the scan with the WCAG 2.0 AA preset that Section 508 uses.

If a federal program or contractor runs a site on Weebly, the builder’s templates and widgets must meet WCAG 2.0 AA. Check that you can edit the parts that fail; if you cannot, document them in your ACR.

Section 508 Checks That Matter for Weebly Sites

Where Weebly Sites Usually Fail Section 508

These problems come up again and again on Weebly sites, and each one fails Section 508. The Weebly accessibility checker explains how to fix them in Weebly.

  • Images without descriptions. Some image areas, such as header and banner images, may not offer an alt text field, so check each one in the editor and describe meaningful images in the text around them.
  • Slideshows and galleries. Auto-advancing slideshows have no pause control, and gallery images often keep file names instead of descriptions.
  • Text styled as headings. Large bold paragraphs look like headings but are not, so a screen reader user cannot jump through the page by heading.
  • Low-contrast theme colors. Light text on a photo header, gray body text and pale buttons often fail the contrast minimum, especially in themes with image overlays.
  • Contact forms and embedded content. Forms with unclear field names, buttons that are images of text, and embedded maps or videos with no title or captions.

What to Test by Hand on Weebly

Automated testing finds many, but not all, Section 508 failures. Check these yourself after the scan:

  1. Test every page with a keyboard only, including menus and dialogs (2.1.1).
  2. Check documents and PDFs separately, since Section 508 covers them too.
  3. Record results per criterion if you need to complete a VPAT or ACR.
  4. Rescan after each fix. Continuous monitoring rescans up to 500 URLs per domain daily and keeps a dated record in the Compliance Vault.

Weebly Section 508 Checker: Frequently Asked Questions

Does Section 508 apply to my Weebly site?

It applies to federal agencies and the technology they buy. A private Weebly site is not directly covered, but vendors selling to agencies are often asked to show conformance in an Accessibility Conformance Report.

Which WCAG version does Section 508 use?

The Revised 508 Standards incorporate WCAG 2.0 Level A and AA. Meeting WCAG 2.1 or 2.2 AA also meets WCAG 2.0 AA.

Can this scan produce a VPAT for my Weebly site?

No. A VPAT or ACR needs a full review, including manual testing. The scan gives you automated results per criterion to start from, and AccessBell Pro keeps a dated record of them.
